Nil Battey Sannata is an upcoming Indian film written and directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, produced by Aanand L. Rai, Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane and Jitendra Tiwari. The film is set in the Madhya Pradesh villages of Taalgaon and Shahada near Jabalpur. It stars Swara Bhaskar as a single mother struggling with poverty who sends her daughter to live with her upper-caste relatives in Lucknow so that she can study in a better school. The film received positive reviews from critics and was also selected as India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards. Saraswati Shukla (Swara Bhaskar) is a single mother who belongs to a socially conservative rural area in Madhya Pradesh. Her husband, Raghu (Siddharth Mahadevan), has abandoned her and their five-year-old daughter, Chhoti (Mrunmayee Deshpande), and she takes up various odd jobs to support them. She works as a maid in white people's houses during the day, or sells "Makhanas" or snacks made of flour at roadside stalls. Chhoti is a clever child and her school teacher, Ranju (Kalpana Patowary), is impressed with her intelligence. Ranju is also a friend of Saraswati's cousin sister in Lucknow. It is time for the school entrance examinations and Saraswati does not have enough money to send Chhoti to a private school. She seeks help from her parents, who refuse because they feel harassed by their daughter's visits every time she needs money. Finally, an idea strikes her: why not send Chhoti to stay with relatives in Lucknow? She decides to go to Ranju thinking that with a strong recommendation from a teacher there might be help from her relatives at least with the stay money. When Saraswati arrives in Lucknow, Ranju invites her to stay in her house. When she meets with Saraswati's father-in-law, he is convinced that the child is not Raghu's daughter and forbids Saraswati from staying with him. That night, after returning home, she packs her bags and makes plans to leave again early the next morning. However, Chhoti cannot bear the thought of moving away from her mother and says that she won't go if it means separating from Saraswati. Ranju, who is Chhoti's friend and classmate, helps her see the situation from another perspective. "If you go away, mom will be alone here. She will have to ask other people to help her. It may take years for you to come back." That night Ranju teaches Chhoti how to play the classical Indian game of "Chakka". This helps Saraswati realise that she can stay with Ranju if she wants to, but she also has made up her mind about leaving. The next morning Saraswati leaves for Shahada with Chhoti in tow. She asks Chhoti about their next destination and they decide on Taalgaon... cfa1e77820
